What is rubbish removal?
Rubbish removal, sometimes called a man and van clearance or junk removal, is a collection service where a crew comes to your property, carries the waste out and loads it into their van for disposal. You do not need to hire a skip, arrange a permit or lift anything yourself. Point at what needs to go and the crew does the rest.
It covers house clearances, garden waste, garage, loft and shed clear-outs, old furniture and appliances, and office or shop clear-outs. The firm takes the waste to a licensed site, and many recycle or pass on reusable items where they can.
When rubbish removal beats a skip
Rubbish removal makes most sense when the waste is somewhere awkward, such as a loft, an upstairs flat or a cellar, when you are not able to do heavy lifting yourself, or when there is nowhere to put a skip. It also suits bulky items like sofas, wardrobes and mattresses that never sit neatly in a skip, and loads that are too big for the car but too small to fill a whole skip.
A skip is usually the better choice for a renovation that produces waste every day for a week or more, and a grab lorry suits large amounts of soil or rubble. If you are not sure which fits, describe the job and the providers we match you with can tell you.
What can and can't be removed
Most general household junk can go: furniture, mattresses, carpets, boxes, toys, garden waste, old timber and bagged builders' waste in sensible amounts. Fridges, freezers, mattresses, TVs and some other electricals may carry an extra charge, because they have to be processed separately from general waste.
Hazardous waste, including asbestos, needs a licensed specialist and will not be taken on a standard collection. Plasterboard often needs to be kept separate, and paints, chemicals, oils and gas bottles are usually excluded or need special arrangements. Mention anything like this when you enquire so there are no surprises on the day.
Access, permits and licensing
There is no skip, so there is no council skip permit to arrange. The crew needs somewhere to park the van reasonably close to the property and safe access to the waste, so let them know about stairs, lifts, narrow paths, parking restrictions or anything especially heavy.
Any business that collects and carries other people's waste must be registered as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency. As a householder you have a duty of care to check that whoever takes your waste is authorised to do so, because if it is later fly-tipped you can be held responsible. Ask for the firm's waste carrier registration number, check it on the Environment Agency's public register, and keep a receipt showing what was taken. Be wary of anyone offering to take waste away cheaply without giving those details.
How rubbish removal quotes work
Rubbish removal is usually priced by volume, meaning how much space your waste takes up in the van, with extra for heavy materials, items that need separate handling and difficult access such as long carries or several flights of stairs. Some firms will quote from a description or photos, while others prefer to see the load and confirm the price before they start.
We pass your details to independent, local clearance providers that cover your postcode, and they come back with prices and availability so you can compare. We do not carry out collections ourselves, and there is no obligation to book. We aim to match you with registered waste carriers, but checking the registration yourself only takes a minute.
